Press Release Body = Washington, DC - The United Cross-Species Ecology Foundation (UCSEF) announced today the filing of a Notice of Intent with Queensland authorities in Australia, to seek the death penalty in the case involving the fatal barbing of Steven Irwin, the environmental warrior and television host who died September 4, 2006 while filming a documentary on the Great Barrier Reef. The notice filed by the foundation calls for the stingray directly responsible for Mr. Irwin's death to be "put-down" or executed, in a manner consistent with the law. The UCSEF is basing its Notice of Intent on the International MacMurray treaty signed by the USA, Australia and 14 other countries and territories in 1906. The agreement makes provisions for the "culling and death of animals directly responsible for the untimely passing of citizenry". The UCSEF views the wrongful death of any living entity as a crime and promotes strict punishment for violators, human or animal.
The UCSEF promotes cross-species equality by supporting global legislation and policies that treat all life forms justly. The Stingray that took Steve Irwin's life is just as guilty of a crime as humans who kill living things for food and clothing. The UCSEF is requesting that the Stingray accused in Mr. Irwin's death be held in custody and not released into the wild. After reviewing the videotape and any other evidence, the guilty party should receive swift and uncompromising punishment.
Chris Baird, North American spokes person for the UCSEF has been an outspoken friend of the environment and fan of Steve Irwin for over thirty years "The task at hand is to seek justice for Steve Irwin and the Animal Kingdom he so generously served," said Baird. "Steve was a bridge of understanding between wild life and humans. His death at the barb of this creature damages the trust we are trying to build between all life - animal and human alike. All living creatures should be outraged at this pointless death and stand with us in our call for the death penalty. The Stingray that committed this crime is nothing short of a murderer."
Police Captain Chip Douglas of Queensland, Australia has the accused Stingray in a saltwater holding tank and is seeking expert advice on the case. "This stingray is not going anywhere right now. After we analyze the video evidence and consult with experts we will have a better picture of where this case is going". Douglass, who takes no official stand on the case added, "I am not an attorney but if a crime has been committed here, I will carry out my duty."
While some advocates in the environmental community are defending the actions of this Stingray as a natural response, members of the UCSEF view all killing as a violation of Mother Nature's laws. "Killing is simply wrong and we are not hypocritical in our beliefs. It is wrong for humans to kill animals for food and clothing and it is just as wrong for animals to kill humans", said Baird.
